Invented during the Ming Dynasty, when loose leaf brewing first came in vogue, the Gaiwan is a traditional lidded bowl used as teapot and teacup in one. The lid does more than provide shy tea leaves a bit of privacy as they shed their inhibitions in their hot bath. Held slightly ajar, the lid is used to strain tea leaves from a fresh infusion, while the saucer helps you lift the hot cup to your lips. This exquisite example is hand prepared which can lead to unikat features in the textured surface and smooth interior glaze.
