Reading time: 3 minutes

P&T introduces Satemwa Tea Estate in Malawi as a trailblazing partner — one that produces rare, high-quality teas through Fairtrade certification and innovative growing methods, and that shares P&T's commitment to sustainable and socially responsible tea cultivation.

Since its founding in 1923, Satemwa Tea Estate has produced extraordinary rare teas and remains the only family-run tea farm in Malawi. With a dedicated approach to innovation and close collaboration with local farmers, Satemwa crafts specialist teas including white, green and black varieties. Its Fairtrade certification in 2007 underlines the estate's deep commitment to social responsibility and fair working conditions.

A Journey into the Highlands of Malawi

Amid the idyllic landscapes of the Shire Highlands, Satemwa produces tea at altitudes of between 1,000 and 1,200 metres. The combination of fertile soils and an ideal climate gives rise to exceptional tea quality. Alexander Kay, Satemwa's tea master, puts it simply: "We want to put a twist on our tea specialities by constantly daring to try something new."

Satemwa Tea Estate: Malawi's first fairtrade farm

Satemwa was the first Fairtrade-certified farm in Malawi, implementing comprehensive standards around fair pay, sustainable agriculture and investment in social projects. These measures have made a significant and lasting difference to the quality of life of the people who work there.

A meaningful contribution to equal opportunities: Fair working conditions

With a clear focus on equal opportunities, Satemwa offers progressive employment contracts for women, including maternity leave and a range of additional benefits. The estate has been instrumental in developing improved working conditions that serve as a benchmark for the wider tea industry.

A Range as diverse as it is distinctive

Satemwa specialises in the production of artisanal teas, reflected in our own varieties Chikondi Beads and Lapansi Antlers. The estate's exceptional growing methods and handcrafted products represent a rich spectrum of flavours that captivates tea lovers the world over.

Great Tea that does good

Satemwa Tea Estate brings together outstanding tea quality and a genuine social commitment — particularly to women working in the tea industry. This partnership reflects P&T's ambition to unite sustainability and exceptional tea craftsmanship with social responsibility.
