The origin of the tea

Our KUMANO combines tea leaves and stems cultivated using different traditional Japanese methods. It includes Gyokuro, a green tea shaded for several weeks under special nets, known for its intense "umami" flavor. Additionally, it contains Sencha which is grown under Japan's sun. The result is a perfectly balanced premium tea that reflects Japanese craftsmanship.

FAQ about Kumano

Kukicha, often referred to as “twig tea”, is a Japanese green tea made primarily from the stems, stalks and leaf veins of the tea plant. These parts are separated during the processing of classic green teas such as Sencha or Gyokuro. Because it contains a higher proportion of stems, Kukicha typically has a particularly mild and balanced character with delicate sweetness and fresh green notes.

Karigane is considered a premium type of Kukicha. While standard Kukicha is often produced from Sencha or Bancha, Karigane is made from higher-grade teas such as Gyokuro or high-quality Sencha. As a result, Karigane usually offers a more refined and complex flavour profile. Teas like KUMANO combine the gentle character of twig tea with the elegance of fine Japanese green teas.

Kukicha is known for its mild, fresh flavour profile. Typical characteristics include light grassy notes, a subtle sweetness and a refreshing finish. Depending on the origin and processing, hints of citrus, nuts or light marine nuances may also be present. Thanks to its soft character, Kukicha is generally less bitter than many traditional green teas.

Yes, Kukicha contains caffeine because it is made from the tea plant, Camellia sinensis. However, since it is primarily composed of stems and leaf stalks, Kukicha is often perceived as milder than many other green teas. Many tea drinkers therefore consider it a gentler option compared with stronger green teas.

Kukicha is best prepared with water at around 70 °C. Use approximately 4 g of tea for 250 ml of water and allow it to infuse for about 2 minutes. This gentle brewing method helps bring out the tea’s fresh and delicate flavours.

Yes, high-quality Kukicha is well suited to multiple infusions. With each infusion, different flavour nuances can emerge. The first infusion is often slightly shorter, while subsequent infusions can be gradually extended.

Kukicha originates from Japan and is part of the country’s long-standing green tea tradition. It is produced during the processing of teas such as Sencha or Gyokuro, when stems and leaf veins are separated and used to create this distinctive style of tea. Many Kukicha teas come from well-known Japanese tea regions and reflect their characteristic flavour profiles.

Thanks to its mild and balanced character, Kukicha is suitable for both beginners and experienced green tea drinkers. Anyone looking for a refined Japanese green tea with a smooth taste and low bitterness will often find Kukicha an approachable and versatile choice.
