Berlin - Packaging is far more than just a covering; it is at the heart of a global environmental debate. With growing amounts of plastic and limited recycling rates, the need for sustainable solutions is increasingly urgent. P&T addresses this challenge with a clear focus on resource-saving design, circular approaches, and the aspiration to rethink packaging comprehensively.
Packaging as a central environmental Challenge
Packaging significantly contributes to global plastic waste, accounting for approximately 40% of all plastic waste. Each year, approximately 300–400 million tonnes of plastic are produced worldwide, with less than 10% being recycled. These figures underscore the critical role that packaging decisions play in terms of environmental impact and resource use.
Material Choice shapes environmental Footprint
The choice of packaging material significantly influences its environmental footprint throughout its lifecycle. Studies show that the weight and volume of packaging have a substantial effect on transport emissions. Paper-based packaging often requires less energy to produce but should be critically assessed for its water and energy consumption.
Recyclability in Focus
While paper-based packaging is theoretically highly recyclable, actual recycling rates heavily depend on infrastructure and collection and sorting systems. In the EU, the recycling rate for paper and cardboard packaging ranges from 60% to over 80%, while plastic packaging has a significantly lower rate.
Packaging in the Circular Economy
Sustainable packaging concepts are closely linked to the circular economy. Re-use and return systems can significantly reduce packaging waste and extend the lifecycle of packaging. Reuse models, such as multi-use containers and refill stations, offer viable alternatives.
Our Approach: Durability and Resource Conservation
P&T adopts Design for Sustainability (DfS) principles, ensuring packaging is environmentally friendly and durable from the outset. By selecting sustainable materials and prioritising reusability, we reduce resource consumption while considering the entire product lifecycle.
Our Contribution to Sustainable Packaging
P&T focuses on paper-based packaging embedded in a systemic recycling model. We continually assess our processes for responsibility and environmental consciousness to support not just premium products but also a sustainable future.
