Calabash

The calabash is a traditional vessel predominantly used in South American cultures, particularly in Paraguay, Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay, for preparing and enjoying mate tea. Originally made from hollowed and dried gourds of the calabash plant, it serves more than just as a Mate cup: it is a cultural symbol and an essential accessory for mate enthusiasts.

Description

Today, the primary purpose of the calabash is for consuming mate tea. Mate, a caffeinated beverage, is traditionally brewed from the dried leaves of the mate shrub. The calabash not only acts as a container but also plays a central role in the mate ritual, where the tea is shared and enjoyed in a social circle. When drinking mate, a drinking straw called Bombilla is inserted into the Mate cup to sip the tea. Calabashes come in various sizes and shapes, often uniquely decorated or engraved with intricate patterns, making each calabash a one-of-a-kind piece.

Historical Background

The use of the calabash can be traced back to the indigenous tribes of South America, particularly the Guaraní. These peoples were the first to discover the invigorating properties of mate tea and established the custom of drinking it from calabashes. The tradition of drinking mate has seen little change over the centuries and is now an integral part of South American everyday culture. Beyond its practical use, the calabash has played and continues to play an important role in social and ceremonial contexts.

  • Symbol of Community: Sharing mate from a calabash symbolises connectivity and friendship.
  • Authentic Preparation: To fully bring out the flavour of mate, the calabash should be seasoned before first use by rubbing the inside with mate herb and letting it rest for several hours – a process known as "curar."
  • Maintenance: A calabash should be thoroughly cleaned and dried after each use to prevent mould growth, as it is naturally unsuitable for dishwasher cleaning.
